TRAINING TO
BE A GUIDE

Institute of Tourist Guiding launched

For a number of years the Association of Professional Tourist Guides has been actively involved with the development of guide training qualifications in England, as well as internationally.

The Blue Badge course is offered by the Guild of Registered Tourist Guides. Please email them: for application forms. Details of the course can also be found on their Web site. Look under Qualifications & Training - Guide Training - London.

Our members have been invited to develop guide training courses in many parts of the world. In the current context of the emphasis placed by member states of the EU on quality and sustainable tourism, we are committed to upholding high standards and, where possible, improving the quality of guiding and heritage interpretation. After many years of promotion, the Blue Badge is now established as the mark of quality in guiding.

Continuing Professional Development

To maintain the high standard of the Blue Badge qualification, APTG is committed to Continuing Professionial Development. All members are constantly updating their information, by means of the monthly newsletter "Guidelines", media news and by attending lectures, courses and visits which are abundant in London. APTG organises its own programme of lectures and visits from autumn to spring, which are well attended by its members.

Goddard and Gibbs

This picture shows APTG members on an educational visit to the studios of Goddard & Gibbs, to experience the work of artists and craftsmen at this renowned company. Recent Goddard & Gibbs creations include the stained glass west window in the King Henry VII chapel at Westminster Abbey and a new stained glass window for the Queen's Chapel in St James's Palace, to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. In the picture, guides watch a demonstration of the cementing of stained glass
